How to install dowel screws?

Just a question on dowel screws

I've never used them before and just wondering how they are installed?

Is there a special tool required?

And for a M8 diameter what size drill would you use for a pilot hole ?

Hi @Heath80,

To install the screws, tightly grip one ends threads with a set of curved jaw locking pliers. Insert the other end of the screw into your pilot hole and use the pliers as a handle to screw the dowel screw in until you reach the midway point. Then, remove the pliers and use that piece of timber to screw the other side of the screw into your other piece of timber.

For softwoods, you'd typically drill around a 5mm hole and for hardwoods, closer to a 6mm hole. Your pilot hole should be no smaller than the thickness of the shank of the screw, as illustrated in the image below, and as deep as the threaded section. This allows the threads to bite into the timber without putting undue stress on it.
