How to add a wooden top to shoe cabinet?

I've got an IKEA shoe cabinet I'm looking to do a little DIY on and hoping to get some guidance on:

  • What materials to select
  • Which option below would be easier/harder
  • How to go about the project

I'm thinking of two options:
1. Adding a wood top

2. Adding scalloped front

Wood Top Option

  • What type of wood should I use for this? I'm hoping to get a bit of a lighter finish that looks natural

Scalloped Option

  • What's the best way to fix panels to the door?
  • Will there be enough clearance for the doors to open if I use this panel? The doors fold open around a hinge at the bottom of each drawer

Re: How to add a wooden top to shoe cabinet?

Hello @androidhaig

Thanks for sharing your question about adding a wooden top and modifying the front of your shoe cabinet. If you are after a light-coloured piece of timber I suggest having a look at it. It comes in various shapes and sizes and has a bright surface finish to it. The best part is that it can be stained, oiled, or sealed to almost anything you want.

I recommend measuring the top of your shoe rack before going to the store so that you'll have a reference when looking at the available sizes. In regards to the 900 x 1200mm 12mm, Lining Panel White MDF Primed Scallop 22.5mm. I believe it will be necessary to cut the bottom of the panel at a 45-degree angle to avoid hitting the door panel at the bottom.

To fix the panel in place. I propose using Selleys Liquid nails in combination with small Bullethead nails.

Re: How to add a wooden top to shoe cabinet?

Thanks @redracer01 ! Super helpful.

Do you know if Bunnings would be able to do the 45 degree cut in stores?

Re: How to add a wooden top to shoe cabinet?

Hi @androidhaig,

Unfortunately, our saws can only cut at the right angles to the sheet and not at 45 degrees. You might like to check out our circular saws that will allow you to make this cut yourself at home.

Regarding the timber top, you'll find a variety of timber panels in store that would suit your needs.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
