Hello @hopelesscarol

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your ceiling vents.

Quite often if you don't see any screws on the outside of the vent it's possible that it's fixed in place with steel spring clips. I suggest using a flat head screwdriver and inserting it between your ceiling and the edge of the vent. Slowly pulldown on the screwdriver to lift the corner of the vent out. Once you see the clip of the corner, you'll have a better idea of where the other clips are.

Once you have the vent off you can use ordinary hot water and detergent to wash the grease and dirt buildup on the vent. If you are thinking of replacing it, just make sure to bring your old vent with you to make sure that new vent is the same size, and the new clips are located relatively in the same spot.

If you decide just to wash it, it's important that it's totally dry before you re-install it.

Since you'll be using a ladder, I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to use a ladder safely by @Adam_W.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
