Tips for making a room look bigger?

We’re renting a small place in Sydney's inner suburbs. Obviously we can’t do much to the property as it’s not ours, but as it’s a small (run down!) Victorian I would love some tips for making the living area feel bigger. The owner says we can paint if we like. I think a brighter white instead of the grey will help. Anyone got any other tips?

Short of knocking a wall down...White walls, pastel/flat colours, mirrors will help. Furniture helps but should compliment the limited space you have. A lack of anything makes it.look.small but if the room looks like it has purpose without being crowded you'll be onto a winner

Decluttering at present. So many people are raving about Marie Kondo at the moment so I feel very much on trend.
