The project

We bought our new home at the end of 2021, and wanted to create a dining area that really had some wow factor yet was also practical for our four growing children. A space where they can sit and relax, play a board game, or chill with friends after school. With that in mind it needed to be durable and have room for a small village and still be comfy.

We started by sketching out what we wanted and after a final design, we set off to our local Bunnings for all our materials.

The main seating is a corner booth and was hand made with a timber base and Melamine panels with a 90mm skirting to cap the top off. We had some leftover floorboards too, so we decided to utilise them as the feature part on the base of the seating.

We covered the walls with shiplap panelling, deciding on fixing it horizontally (better coverage with less cutting and joining) and covering it with Dulux Vivid White. We also fitted a powerpoint for practicality

We also changed the light switches to a satin black finish for a bit of pop to go with the door which we painted in Dulux Raku. Also, very good for avoiding grubby fingers leaving smudges on all the switches and doors.

For now, we have an expandable table that is a good space saver. We will be deciding on a different one for the future after we have replaced the outdated tiling.
