Shoe shelves in the staircase

What do you do when you have too many shoes and not enough space? (get rid of shoes you don't wear) Make more space

Before we bought our house, most previous places we lived had a wide entrance and therefore having cheap stack-on boards was not a problem: you hide them behind the door and it looks nice and tidy.

However, in our House we have stairs, path to the bottom room and windows on the opposite to stairs wall.

So what is the solution? You guessed it: break the walls

After checking and hesitating for some time, we started from the inside of the under stairs area and found all the studs and construction wood. Then based on these findings removed the plaster from inside and outside and the result is here:

Then the shelf structure was carefully 3d modelled in Sketch where later we got the required sizes of each board/wall and materials we needed:

Of we go to Bunnings to buy some plywood, screws and angle brackets (a lot of angle brackets, I think we got like 4 packets of 20).

After careful measurements of the shelf's first level base (maybe 5 times, cause "oh no, this was not the face side" or "oh no, this was upside-down") we got our first level in:

Continue the process again and again and you get something like this:

You will ask "Hm, this edges don't look very good, what to do?"... "No worries, nothing that (duck tape) body-filler can not do!"

After a lot of sanding and applying, sanding and applying over and over and over ....

Time to get some paint. Went to Bunnings store and grabbed couple of sample papers to compare with our wall. And what a surprise, our wall colour was the most common one

Back to the store to grab a bucket of the paint and here is the end result:

P.S. Kudos to my wife, who did 99% of the project.

Re: Shoe shelves in the staircase

Hi @den1ska,

Your wife (and you) have created a great functional feature piece for your entryway. Looks like you will need to purchase more shoes to fill it up properly! A job well done.
