How to install a stud wall against a window?

Hi everyone,

We have just met the drafter for the garage conversion project. But one of the proposed new stud wall (with soundshield wall batt in the cavity) will be intersected with our current garage window.

The drafter said to save cost its totally fine to leave the window there unused and still install the wall according to our plan.

Question is, how can we instruct the caparenter to do that ? Are there any details we need to be aware of when communicating with the carpenter / builder ?

Thank you for any advice.🙏🙏

Re: How to install a stud wall against a window?

Hello @ivanptr

If you are not changing the window and wish for the wall to go into the window cavity, the builder will only be able to build it up to the aluminium frame of the window. They will not be able to build it up to the glass. This is something that you will need to be very clear with your builder, you need to ask them, how far will the frame go inside the window cavity?

Keep in mind that once the builder builds the frame, the timber frame will be visible from the outside window as the front of it will be so close to the glass, you'll not be able to paint it.

To be absolutely clear with your builder, place a piece of off cut timber right next to your window and tell them that this is where you want the wall to end. Once they see what you want, there should be no misunderstanding.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks so much Eric for the tips

which we havent thought about before..!

So if they can only build up to the aluminum window frame, there will be a small gap between the wall and the glass, what should the builder do to seal the gap ? Or we can do it ?

Re: How to install a stud wall against a window?

Hi @ivanptr

It looks like that part of the sliding window moves left to right. If that is the case, I propose having a look at the Raven 915mm Anodised Bronze Weather Strip Door Seal. You can install it vertically on both side of the wall just lightly touching the glass. This will at least provide a seal and prevent noise from passing through. Plus, it will still allow you to slide the glass window open.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.
