What sealant for particle board?

What sealant for particle board?

I've removed the veneer side of a 60's sideboard due to water damaged particle board. I have sanded and filled the particle board back to where it needs to be but the surface is still a bit rough to attach new veneer. Is there something I could seal it with to give a smooth surface for the veneer to attach?

Re: Sealant for particle board

Hello @BDG

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about sealing particle board.

Before I make any recommendations, would it be possible for you to post a photo of the sideboard you're currently repairing? It will give our members a chance to assess the condition of the particle board. We can then make recommendations on how to proceed. Can you also please tell us if you used a sanding block on the surface of the particle board?

If you need a hand posting the pictures, please let me know.

Eric

Re: Sealant for particle board

Thanks Eric,

Here are some pictures. I'm using Timbermate for the section that was too damaged.

Re: Sealant for particle board

Hi @BDG,

What sort of results do you get from sanding the particle board? Does that smooth it enough to apply the veneer?

You could potentially do a thin skimcoat of the Timbermate filler over the entire surface and then sand that back flat. But, I'm not aware of any sealers that will self-level into the lower spots, they're more likely to just coat the entire surface including the high and low spots.

Re: Sealant for particle board

Thanks Mitchell,

I'll give the Timbermate skimcoat a go and see what happens.
