Re: Can you use Specrite wood panels for a bed frame?

Hello @slk

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about using a Specrite panel for your bed frame.

The Specrite panel is actually quite strong, but before I make any recommendations can you please tell us how you plan to use it, or will you be using the entire panel to build the entire bed frame? Did you draw a plan on how you will be assembling the bed frame? If you did, can you please share it with the community?

Once our members see your plan, they will be able to assess its construction. We can then make recommendations on what extra timber you can use.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: Can you use Specrite wood panels for a bed frame?

Hi Eric

Thanks for replying ,

Yes, I have drawn the plans in Autocad , here below the snap shot

I have bought 2100 L x 900 W x 30 Th mm specrite panel from bunnings tarneit and cut it into

2060 x 200 - 2 off

1620 x 200 - 2 off

and some legs as per the drawing , this will be the main load bearing section

can you please suggest that the 2060 x 200 x 30th sections are capable of taking up the load without bowing andd breaking

Re: Can you use Specrite wood panels for a bed frame?

Hi @slk,

These lengths of finger-jointed timber are equally strong as standard solid timber. In fact, you'll find that if they do fail, it will typically be on a section of timber and not at the glued joint. However, beds of that size generally have a couple of feet in the middle under the slats. Not only do these feet prevent the slats from sagging under weight, but they help support the sides and prevent them from cracking.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Can you use Specrite wood panels for a bed frame?

Hello @slk

Thank you very much for posting that update. Your bed frame looks fantastic! The design looks very strong and it's good that you placed a center support for the slats. The slats should support your mattress very well.

Again, thank you for sharing this excellent project.
