Biggest mistakes when renovating

Planning is always key, so I agree with number one in this article to an extent. Of course, it is okay to renovate one room at a time, just as long as you plan first and have an overall plan for the whole house and total renovation.

What do you think are the biggest mistakes people make when renovating? And have you made any?

@RenoQueen

Here are some mistakes people are definately doing:

1.  Not sticking to a budget and overspending.

2.  Not researching products and materials.

3.  DIY'ing beyond your means.

4.  Not obtaining the necessary council permits/approvals.

5.  Buying cheapest does not necessary mean it will be the best.

6.  Renovating to the current 'FAD'.

Cheers

Re: Biggest mistakes when renovating

Good list @darylhewston. It's amazing that people still do number 4 considering works can be very expensive and they risk being forced to tear them down. I think number 1 is a trap at the moment. With such rapidly rising property prices, people can be tempted to overspend thinking they will get it back when it comes time to sell.
