I have found another way of making wheels with the min number of saw cuts.  Set the compound saw at 22.5 degrees, and over at say 45. The 22.5 needs to be correct, but by turning the wood over after each cut, any error is negated. The wood that’s comes in short lengths at the Bunnings store are handy.

To show how well matched the join is, and screw together from the sides. Of course the spokes are attached by screws from the outside. They are recessed into the wood.

Reminds me of Birdsmouth Jointing. That has a 22.2mm thickness limit though without extra work.
