That was really helpful, thanks @Adam_W!  I've got a few fruit trees to plant in the garden of our new house with the kids, which I haven't done before, so this advice is excellent.  I appreciate your presentation style - very easy to understand!

Looks like I have been doing the wrong thing compressing the soil too much.

Yes, that's a logigical & easy mistake to make @AHoy
People often compress the soil with the aim of stabilising the young tree but ironically in the long term it has the opposite effect - the compressed soil is harder for new roots to establish in & it's the roots that provide real stability.
