Re: Raised vege garden

Great raised beds, look very solid, just what I need, mine were built from whatever we could find at the time, many years ago & now in need of replacing, there are 6 but too close together so is hard to get wheel barrow around them, so have a bit of a job ahead. Thanks for the inspiration!

Re: Raised vege garden

G'day Bruce,

Approximately how much do the materials used in this demonstration cost in total from Bunninga?

Regards,

Shaun Newman

Re: Raised vege garden

Hi @Shaun_Newman13,

Welcome to Workshop. It's great to have you join us.

I will tag @bruceprince for you so he sees your question and hopefully he can share some indication of the cost of materials for his fantastic raised garden beds. But please note that Workshop is a home improvement community of people just like yourself. If you would like some assistance from Bunnings regarding the cost of materials, we would recommend you contact your nearest store.

I hope Workshop members provide you great advice and inspiration for your projects. Please post whenever you need a hand or have a project to share with the community. Also feel free to get in touch with me if you ever need help getting the most from the site.

Thanks,

Jason

Re: Raised vege garden

I am very impressed with the raised garden beds. These would be perfect for our place. The timber used look like the treated pine sleepers I purchased from Bunnings to build a retaining wall. Is that what they are? What are these sleepers treated with and is it safe to use them to grow vegetables?

Re: Raised vege garden

@Ral,

Many thanks for joining in the discussion. Do you remember what sleepers you purchased? You are correct that you do need to ensure they are suitable for use in a vegetable garden. The product description on the Bunnings website should give you the information you need, for example - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ironwood-200-x-50mm-2-4m-sienna-treated-pine-sleeper_p8423133

There's also D.I.Y. Advice videos and step-by-step instructions on the Bunnings website that you might find helpful, such as How to build a garden bed and How to build a raised garden bed with sleepers.

If you need a hand with anything, I would encourage you to hit the Start a discussion button. We have lots of community members who are happy to share their experience and knowledge.

Let me also extend a very warm welcome to the Workshop community.

Re: Raised vege garden

A couple of people have asked about the type of sleeper used. They are normal 120x50x2400 H4 treated pine sleepers from Bunnings. Yes, the protective treatment in my opinion is not worth worrying about as far as using them to frame a vege garden.

The gardens measure 2.4m wide and 4.8m long. The two beds are more than sufficient to provide my family with plenty of fresh vegetables, and are still going strong as we move into the 2018 Spring.

Happy gardening, everyone!

Bruce

Re: Raised vege garden

Hi @bruceprince

How tall is the garden walls? They look to be about 800mm?

If so, what did you use in the bottom, or did you fill it will soil completely?
