What's on the base? How does it drain?

Re: Herb planter made from flooring off-cuts

This herb planter has been a particularly popular project at the moment so I thought I would add some instructions on how to build it.

As this is a herb planter we will be using H3 treated flooring products similar to 90 x 22mm Decking ACQ Treated Pine 4.8m for the sides. For the legs, we will use Growies 50 x 50mm 600mm Hardwood Steel Cap Garden Stake 6 Pack and to secure the unit together Buildex 8-10 x 40mm Climacoat Countersunk Ribbed Head Treated Pine Screws 100 Pack. Due to the timber being ACQ treated for above ground use, we will line the planter with Grunt 2 x 5m 100um Black Multi-Purpose Builders Film.

To build the larger base cut 8 pieces of the decking to one meter as these will be the sides. Start by pre-drilling and screwing four of the boards into the hardwood legs. You can cut off the points of the spikes or leave them to fix the unit into the ground with.

Once you have completed this pre-drill and screw the remaining four boards to join the sections.

Once you have the frame and sides screwed together, flip it upside down so we can screw the baseboards on. Cut nine boards to 1 meter in length. Pre-drill and screw them across the base allowing a small gap in between for drainage. You will either need to remove the corners of the first and last board to fit around the legs or leave a gap when laying them.

To ensure the boards don't sag, cut two brace boards to fit and screw them on top.

Creating the inner box is done in the same fashion as the external one just with smaller dimensions. Remember when you lay the plastic to put an adequate amount of drainage holes in it so the plants don't get wet feet.

I hope this is of assistance and if anyone would like further details, please let me know.
