Replacing old school roller shower screens

Hi fellow renovaters & DIY'ers,

Just wondering if anyone has had any success with replacing their old 3 panel roller shower screen door with a modern hinged single pane shower door (without replacing any other part of the shower) either DIY or through a specialist? We're doing a reno on a very tight budget & don't want to overcapitalise. The rest of the shower is in pretty good condition but the roller door is ugly and annoying. TIA!!

Hi @Appleeye,

Great to see you make your first Workshop post. Welcome aboard! I trust you will get plenty of helpful advice from community members about this project and others in the future.

You might like to take a photo or two of your bathroom so community members can see what you are working with and provide more specific advice.

Please let me know if you need a hand uploading images.

Excuse the dark photos & ugly bathroom (& note the multi grips in place of one tap, which broke ha ha). Thanks Jason... I couldn't see where to do it on my phone last night, but looked again on my computer once I got your message

No worries @Appleeye. I have fixed the orientation of the photos for you.

Thanks for sharing. I hope community members have some suggestions for you.

Video for istalling frameless screens.

Shower door kit

Would have to cap or remove the frame and capping would change how you drill to fit the fixing screws and you would need to order in a custom door and end panel.

Re: Replacing old school roller shower screens

@Appleeye I wouldn't do anything until you can afford to renovate the whole bathroom. I understand those doors are really annoying to open and shut but you would need to rip out the shower base as well, then you'll need to retile... It will quickly add up and you'll still have an outdated bathroom. Better to wait until you can redo the lot like @Darren and his recent bathroom renovation - https://www.workshop.com.au/t5/Interiors/Diary-of-a-bathroom-renovation/m-p/12004.

Re: Replacing old school roller shower screens

Thanks for the shout out @Isobel! @Appleeye, we had one of these sliding shower screens in our smaller second bathroom and it was a horrible relic of a door. It used to get jammed every time you tried to open it and you'd end up getting in and out of the shower sideways... Our shower set-up is different to yours - it has walls on three sides - so our remedy was to pull the door out and replace with a rail and curtain. This was a very cheap bathroom reno! I managed to get the door out without having to replace the base, however, I did have to do a bit of tiling as some of the tiles came off the wall when I pulled the door supports off the wall. It can be done but you need to be careful. Good luck!

Thanks Brad!! I'll check out the video. Is this something you've tried yourself? Or is this you?
